ARK Survival Ascended Bjarnheim Map Guide (2026) — Fimbulwinter, Muspelheim Creatures, Bosses & How to Play It

Short answer: Bjarnheim is a free, Nordic-themed community map for ARK: Survival Ascended by Nekatus (the Fjordur creator), released 2 August 2026 and still in active development (the author calls it roughly half finished). It's big, it's cold, it has a map-wide Fimbulwinter storm that drops the temperature to −60 °C, fire-breathing Muspelheim alpha variants that melt Tek, six world bosses, and a merchant economy. It's live on the BG Gaming cluster right now — you can transfer in from any of our other 11 maps from level 1.
What Bjarnheim is
- Author: Nekatus, who made Fjordur. Same DNA — fjords, snowfields, dark forests, Norse mythology — rebuilt for Ascended.
- Cost: free (CurseForge mod, ID
1376189, levelBjarnheim_WP). Crossplay on all platforms. - Status: released 2 August 2026, updated frequently. Expect new regions and features to appear; Nordic-inspired structure skins are on the author's list.
- Theme: the map leans into the nine realms — you'll meet Jotunn bosses, Helrunners, fire-realm creatures named for Muspelheim and sea creatures named for Njord.
What you need to own to load it
This is the part that catches people. Bjarnheim pulls assets from several official maps, so the mod page says you need Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, Lost Colony, Genesis: Part 1, Ragnarok and Valguero installed to avoid loading problems. Ragnarok and Valguero are free; the others are paid DLC — in practice most players who've been on ASA a while already have them. If the map fails to load or creatures appear invisible, a missing DLC is the first thing to check.
Fimbulwinter — the map-wide storm
Every so often you'll hear horns, faint at first and louder over time. When they peak, Fimbulwinter hits: the whole map is blanketed in snow and the temperature drops to −60 °C (−76 °F). Two things happen:
- Exposure becomes lethal fast. Fur armour, Fortitude, campfires and an Otter/Dimetrodon are the difference between shrugging it off and freezing on your own doorstep. Keep hot soups stocked.
- Helrunners emerge and attack anything alive — wild, tamed, or you. Treat the horns as a five-minute warning to get tames inside and turrets fed.
The storm passes; the snow melts back to whatever biome you were in.
Unique creatures
Muspelheim creatures are Bjarnheim's answer to Astraeos' Astral variants — fire-themed alpha versions of T-Rex, Ossidon, Mammoth, Malwyn, Megaraptor, Raptor and Fire Wyvern. The important line from the author: they burn and destroy everything in their path, including Tek and metal structures. Don't build in their path and don't kite one home.
Njord creatures are the aquatic alphas: Liopleurodon, Sea Wyrm, Megalodon, Tusoteuthis, Karkinos and Eel. Deep-water resource runs need a real fighting mount, not a Basilo on its own.
The six world bosses
Bjarnheim has six world bosses rather than the usual three-plus-overseer:
- Fjall the Mountain Jotunn
- Hrothgar the Tusk Jotunn
- Icebjorn
- Njorduor the Ocean Jotunn
- Tomb Lord Mikrul
- Ygg the Forest Jotunn
Difficulties, tributes and arena locations are still being tuned by the author and change between versions, so check the in-game terminal rather than an out-of-date guide. What is known from early runs: element rewards are generous (community reports of 170+ element from an alpha kill), which is why Bjarnheim is already popular as a Tek-progression map.
Merchants and gold coins
Bjarnheim adds merchants. You sell them items for Gold Coins and spend the coins on quality equipment — an alternative to fishing for blueprints in drops. Which items sell well changes with updates; hides, pearls and oil have been the reliable early earners.
What's disabled or different
- Tek armour abilities, Dragon Hoard Keys and Treasure Maps are disabled.
- Regular supply crates are off — only cave, deep-sea and Orbital Supply Drop (OSD) crates exist, and OSDs come only in Hard and Legendary, so they're end-game content, not a starter loot source.
- It's a big, cold map with long travel times. A flyer or a fast land mount early makes a huge difference.
Playing Bjarnheim on BG Gaming
Bjarnheim joined the cluster on 23 September 2026 as our twelfth map. Practicalities:
- Find it: search (BG) in the server browser (tick Player Servers) — the server is
(BG) - 5x Tame/Breed - Bjarnheim - Map Cluster. Or transfer in from any BG map via the Depot Terminal; you can move from level 1, no Tek required. - Same rules and rates as the rest of the cluster: 5x taming/breeding, 2.5x harvest, 2x XP, PvE, no wipe, per-tribe structure limits.
- Coins, quests and the marketplace work on it like any other map. Login and playtime rewards count.
- Our tip for the first evening: land near the coast in the milder south, tame something fast, and build a real enclosed base with a fireplace before you go exploring north. The first Fimbulwinter you hear the horns for is the one that kills unprepared tames.

FAQ
Is Bjarnheim free? Yes, it's a free mod map. You need the DLC maps listed above installed for it to load cleanly.
Is it finished? No — the author describes it as roughly 50% complete. It's very playable now; expect more regions, bosses and cosmetics to arrive in updates. Because of that, occasional spawn changes and moved locations are normal.
Is it on console? Yes, it's cross-platform. Our Bjarnheim server is crossplay PC / Xbox / PS5 like the rest of the cluster.
How does it compare to Fjordur? Same author, same Norse feel, bigger scale, and new systems (Fimbulwinter, merchants, Muspelheim/Njord alphas, six bosses). Fjordur itself isn't in ASA, so Bjarnheim is the closest thing.
Do the fire alphas really burn Tek? That's the author's description — Muspelheim creatures destroy Tek and metal structures. Keep bases away from their roaming areas and don't lead one to your door.
